Sửa Ðổi Lỗi Lầm Thì
Nghiệp Sẽ Tiêu Tan

H.T. Tuyên Hóa

Faults When Changed
Will Disappear

Ven. Master Hsuan Hua

All of you who are dwelling together in one place have affinities with each other, and so you should not become angry, and even more so, you should not scold each other. Such behavior is totally unacceptable. I hope that all of you will have the deportment of superior people and the skill of restraining your tempers.

Among the Six Paramitas, the Dharma-door of patience is very important. If all of you cultivate the Dharma-door of patience to perfection, then you will have reached an accomplishment. Cultivators of the Way absolutely must not be hot tempered, but instead should endure everything. As the saying goes:

"The fire of ignorance burns down the forest of merit and virtue."

Whatever you do, you must remember this.

Today, there is a disciple who wanted to make a formal public repentance. I saw that his offense was not a major one, and so I told him that he does not need to repent before the assembly. It would be sufficient if he would change. The ancients said:

"People are not worthies and sages
who can be without error?

To have faults and to not shrink from changing them
there is no greater goodness."

When you yourself know you have done something wrong, provided you do not make that mistake again, things will be all right. As it is said:

"Faults when changed then disappear."

Once corrected, your mistakes are eradicated. Even offenses so great that they fill the heavens, will be obliterated once you repent of them. It’s only to be feared that, while knowing you are at error, you stubbornly insist that you are right, and argue your own case unreasonably. That is truly wrong.
What I am saying is not just being said for one person, but for all of you. Whoever you may be, if you in that kind of situation, you should quickly change, and not continue to maintain a false front. The ways in which you are not as you should be with regard to others should be immediately corrected.

All of you who have come here have planted wholesome affinities in the past. Otherwise, you would not have been able to assemble together in this lifetime. You should all be clear about this point. Buddhists, in particular, should emphasize "affinities." There is a popular expression which states this principle very well. It says:

"Those with affinities come together from a thousand miles away. Those lacking affinities, even face to face, do not recognize each other."

There are a lot of principles implied in these two lines.

We, who are living together should have respect for each other and be mutually supportive of each other. It is not permissible to look on and laugh from the sidelines, or to watch the fire and jeer from the opposite bank. You should learn the spirit of the Bodhisattvas, who upon seeing living beings undergoing suffering in deep water or intense fire, feel as if they, themselves were undergoing that torment, and find ways to help those beings leave the sea of suffering. That is the fundamental responsibility of a Buddhist. Your attitude should not be one of rejoicing in the misfortunes of others. This is my wish for all of you. I hope that each one of you will have the sympathies comparable to that of a Bodhisattva, and will sacrifice yourself for the sake of others.
In every instant of thought, be of assistance to Buddhism, propagate the Buddha Dharma, and take responsibility for Buddhism in every way. Be true Buddhist disciples. Do not fear suffering or difficulty. You should exhaust your efforts to protect the Way Place (Bodhimanda), and establish merit and words within Buddhism. A true Buddhist will have the ability to keep up a good fight with courage, and will emerge victorious from every battle. It shouldn’t be that you can not stand the test, and that you go down in defeat as soon as you enter the fray. If you can stand the test, then you are not far from the Way.
